Methods
Solution culture and medium culture are the two main types of hydroponics. The solution culture gets along without any solid medium for the roots of the plant, she only uses a nutrient solution. The three main types of the solution culture is the “static solution culture”, the “continuous flow solution culture”, and aeroponic. The medium culture uses a solid medium for the roots, and it´s name changes depening on the medium itself: for example sand culture, gravel culture or rockwool culture.
There are two main variations for each medium: the underfloor irrigation and the surface irrigation. Independently of the the method, most containers that are used for hydroponics are made of synthetic material, but other materals have been used as well, such as concrete, glass, metal, plant solids and wood. The containers should segregate light to prevent algae formation inside the nutrient solution.
