The basic idea of the aeroponic cultivation method is to expose the plants to a completely closed, respectively nearly closed, cultivation-environment. In this system the roots and the lower trunk of the plants are sprayed with a nutrient solution. The leaves and the crown reach out above them and thereby the roots of the plants are separated from the supporting structure.

Aeroponics Verfahrensweisen

Often the lower trunk gets wrapped with a closed cellular material and put into the openings of the aeroponics. This minimizes the work effort and costs. The weight of bigger plants and possible fruits can be absorbed by using trellises.

In the ideal case the environment is free of diseases and pests, so that the plants are able to develop faster and healthier in their medium. Since most aeroponics are not completely closed to the outside, pests and diseases can still be a danger for the plants. A controlled environment enhances the growth, health, bloom, and the fructiferous period of every plant species or type of crop.

Due to the sensitivity of the root systems, it is common to combine an aeroponics with a conventional hydroponics. That way the hydroponic-system secures the nutrient and water supply of the plants in case the aeroponic-system fails.
