Seed
Chili plants need a warm climate: the ambient temperature should not drop below 20 degrees,
especially not during breeding. In the mid-European area this is only possible through Indoor growth or plant breeding in a temperature-controlled greenhouse. To harvest the fruits between summer and autumn, the seeds have to get disseminated between december and february. The determining factor for the time of seeding is the time the plant needs for it´s development.
For indoor seeding you can use customary flowerpots as well as other containers like a yoghurt pot. To transplant the plants easier when they have reached the perfect size you should only plant one seed per pot. The soil should be sterile and low in nutrients. You can get this kind of soil in any specialized shop. The bigger the chili seed the deeper it has to be planted into the soil - the optimal depth for the seed sowing varies between 0,5 and 1,5 cm. Cover the planted seeds with soil and moisture them afterwards with warm water. Especially during germination it is essential to keep the soil well-moisturized. Nevertheless, the plants should not be waterlogged, because this might lead to moldiness. Just strain off excessive water.
An essential factor for the germination time is the room temperature: the higher the temperature, the faster the plant begins to germinate. Depending on the climatic conditions the germination time often takes between seven and fourteen days – should the room temperature be a little cooler, it can even take up to a few weeks until you can see the first seedlings. As soon as the first seedling emerges, it is important that the plant is exposed to enough sunlight: if you don´t find an appropiate place on the windowsill you can also get particular lighting in any specialized shop.
