Flowering

Flowering is the phase of a flower where the plant comes into blossom. Botanically these seed-plants are also known as Spermatophyta. This phase begins when the first blossoms start to open. When more than half of the buds have opened, the bonatist calls this full flowering. The end of the phase has been reached when the blossoms die away and fall off.

The meaning of the flowering originates in the sexual reproduction. They differentiate between androgynous, monoecious, and dioecious. An androgynous plant has both, feminine and masculine characteristics. Monoecious plants either have male stamens or female carpels with both forms on one plant, while a dioescious plant has male stamens on one flower, and female carpels on the another flower. The outer shell serves as a protection of the fragil reproductive organs - the stamens and carpels.

Characteristic for a flower is the limited growth. Nature offers a wide range of forms, colorings and smells - depending on the plant family. This way the plant´s colorfull shell and the teasing scent of a plant attracts insects for the pollination. In mid-Europe the honey bee primarly executes this task. An alternative for the pollination by animals is the pollination by wind which happens more often for flowers that are less conspicous. Besides the temperature and the possible usage of hormones, there is another aspect which plays an important role for the evocation of the flowering: the correct light. Crucial for short-day-plants and long-day-plants is the duration of the night and therefore the duration of darkness.

Moreover there are plants where it´s flowering can get induced by light impulses. Long-living plants that open during daytime and close during night-time also react to light and follow a specific rhythm. As an alternative to natural sunlight you can use artificial light as a source of light for the plant. These artificial lights have a similar spectrum and a balanced proportion of red and blue light.
