What is an activated carbon filter?
By “activated carbon filter” one understands – as the name implies - a filter that contains activated carbon and uses this carbon to eliminate unwanted substances from fluids or gases. Unwanted substances are for example dust, odor, toxic chemicals as mercury or asbestos, oils, petrol fumes. Especially nowadays the focus is on “clean water” and “clean air “. Thus activated carbon filters become more and more important.
It’s no wonder that these filters increasingly find their application also in the private field:
- In kitchen exhaust hoods to filter food odors
- In house water installations and private well systems. Thereby dirt particles, sediments and harmful substances (also organic compounds) are restrained. Besides that, the drinking water gets purified and freed from asbestos and chlorine etc.
- In vacuums to bind dusts
- In shoes to eliminate smell of sweat (with certain insoles)
- For air filters in cars to reduce pollen and exhaust fumes. Thereby even odorless gases like ozone are suppressed
- In aquariums and pond filters to eliminate toxins, remains of medicine and toxic compounds
- For cigarettes, pipes and lately also for water pipes (bongs) to reduce the nicotine and condensate content
- For (partly illegal) indoor growing to reduce obtrusive odors of certain plants (e.g. marihuana)
- As lining or fabric for special textiles, mostly for sporting supplies.
For example, bamboo activated carbon is due to certain components resistant to bacteria and therefore especially suitable for allergic persons. In addition, bamboo activated carbon in clothes absorbs far infrared radiation and releases it as heat to the body, which improves the blood circulation and accelerates the metabolism.
