Open-structured coconut coir substrate as an alternative to coconut coir blends with perlite or pebbles

CANNA COCO COARSE 50 L is a high-quality, coarse-textured coconut coir substrate for growers who prefer a particularly airy, fast-draining root environment. It has been developed as a natural alternative to coconut coir mixes containing perlite or pebbles and achieves their typical drainage and irrigation properties entirely without the need for additional inert substrates.

For COCO COARSE, CANNA uses carefully selected, coarser coconut fibres with a lower proportion of fine particles. This results in a permanently open substrate structure with an excellent air-to-water ratio. At the same time, the actual usable volume of the root zone is maximised.

According to the manufacturer, the open structure can create 30–60 % more usable volume in the root zone. CANNA also promotes COCO COARSE as having the potential to produce up to 40% more roots.

Optimal air-to-water ratio

A good supply of oxygen to the roots is an important prerequisite for vigorous plant growth. The coarse structure of CANNA COCO COARSE enables rapid drainage whilst ensuring that sufficient air remains in the root zone.

This makes the growing medium particularly suitable for frequent watering cycles and automated irrigation systems. CANNA particularly recommends COCO COARSE for drip and gravity irrigation. The coarse coconut fibre structure also demonstrates its advantages in larger, manually watered planters.

With rice husks for additional aeration

A distinctive feature of CANNA COCO COARSE is the rice husks it contains. These further aid the aeration of the substrate whilst also serving as a natural source of silicon.

This creates a high-performance coconut fibre base without you having to mix in perlite or pebbles yourself.

Pre-fertilised, pre-buffered and ready for immediate use

CANNA COCO COARSE is supplied pre-fertilised and pre-buffered and can be used straight away. It is therefore not necessary to buffer the coconut fibre substrate beforehand.

It is nevertheless important to check the pH level of your nutrient solution. For optimal results, CANNA recommends a pH level between 5.5 and 6.2.

Which CANNA fertilisers are suitable for COCO COARSE?

According to CANNA, the choice of the appropriate base fertiliser depends in particular on the irrigation strategy and the resulting drainage volume:

For minimal drainage (run-off): CANNA Coco A & B

For higher drainage (from approx. 10%): CANNA COGr Vega & Flores

Application

CANNA COCO COARSE can be added directly from the bag into the desired planting container. Thanks to its coarse, open structure, the substrate is particularly suitable for growing systems where high drainage and a good supply of oxygen to the roots are required.

Throughout the growing cycle, the pH of the nutrient solution should be maintained between 5.5 and 6.2. Although COCO COARSE is supplied pre-buffered, correct pH management remains essential.
